The fact that a new year and a new decade are approaching won’t bring the changes you want in your life on their own. How many times have you made a bunch of New Year’s resolutions, only to abandon them shortly after because no inner change has taken place? For example, you might say, “This year I will quit smoking” or make similar resolutions, without first committing to the internal mental changes necessary to support them.

For instance, the international statistics company Statista reported in 2017 that “43% of Americans wanted to lose weight”, yet only “a quarter of them actually succeeded”.

In the magical journey of personal change, achieving the goal is less important than “who you become along the way”. The transformation you experience throughout the process is what truly matters.

Change Your Thoughts

The only way for your desires to become reality is to turn inward and commit to making them happen. Inner change occurs only when you change your thoughts. How can you do this? The following strategies will help:

Define the Change You Want Clearly and Positively
What positive action do you want to take for yourself in the new year that you didn’t take last year? Define it clearly and write down the benefits you will gain from this change. Also, frame your desired change in a positive way. For example, instead of saying, “I won’t smoke this year,” you could say, “My desire to smoke fades more and more each day, and I am free.” Or instead of saying, “I won’t be alone this year,” you could frame it as, “The new year brings my ideal partner to me, day by day and in every way.”

Let Go of Old Patterns
Which thoughts, beliefs, or habits do you need to change to achieve the transformation you want? How do you need to evolve to move in the new direction you desire? Write down all the actions and steps you need to take to release old patterns that are holding you back.

Ask for Guidance with Full Faith
Once you decide to change, the information and support you need will appear. Remarkably, circumstances will start to align in a way that makes you feel supported—through a seminar, a teacher or coach, a book, or even a casual observation that suddenly becomes meaningful at the right moment.

Write Down and Implement the Steps for Change
Many people say, “I already know this,” but knowing is not enough—are you actually applying it? What stops you from taking action? Understanding something theoretically is very different from applying it in practice. Focus on all the benefits the change will bring and don’t let anything hold you back this time.

Track Your Progress
Once you decide to make a change in your life, a transitional period will follow between the old and the new. During this time, you will need determination, commitment, discipline, and patience. By recording and tracking your progress in a journal, you can reflect on your development, evaluate how far you’ve come, and draw courage from your own growth.
